Both _n and _s textures use 3Dc/ATI2/BC5 compression(?). _d textures use dxt1/dxt5 compression depending if it has an alpha channel or not. Firstly, in Fallout 4 your standard art asset has a diffuse/albedo (RGB of _d), normal map (RG/XY of _n), and glossiness(R/X of _s) and specular/reflectivity(B/Y of _s). Yes, you can edit normal and specular/glossiness maps. Other then that, creation wise, Ddo and Ndo are what people vouch by, but I don't think those have custom export filter for formats, just creations of assets.Ī snippet from ImsumDave on the Nexus forums. (you can check the newer tools on that page link, but I personally never tried them). Outside of a slight performance/memory cost on most newer hardware (might be massive on older ones, not sure, some old Nvidia cards couldn't render them) and maybe some nasty artifacts here and there like this, it doesn't change too much.Īs for what tools you can potentially use, these 2 links are usually tosses around:

I remember Unreal Engine allowing you to import it, the gist is, it's much more efficient and at reduced overhead cost, and (if recall correclty) the blue channel is built into the code (there was a big push for XY type Normal Maps at one point to push this method again), so it would deal with those nasty 'compression' artifacts much better (overlaying detail Normal Maps in this fashion was also much more efficient and respected the base Normal Maps orientation, if it makes sense?), but in return, you lose to access to the Blue and Alpha channels if I recall. • If you ARE working with ATI2N normals, what tools are you using? The common plug-ins for Photoshop (and things like Crazybump) don't support this format, and the DX9>DX10 converter Photoshop action on the Nexus along with the NVidia plugin seem to be missing something when saving as ATI2N, as texture viewers do not properly render the full 3 channel color the way the vanilla normal maps do.
  • Are there any known implications to using DX9 formats in FO4? Quality loss, rendering inconsistencies, performance issues?.
  • The engine appears not to discriminate, and actually renders these in-game, but I can't help but think this is something that shouldn't be ignored, so I wanted to start a thread about this, since information is disjointed. r/falloutlore - In depth discussion for everything lore relatedĭuring this first wave of Fallout mods, I'm noticing that a lot of people are just ignoring the new DX10 normal map format used by the updated FO4 engine (ATI2N / 3DC) and simply reverting to DX9 normals (DXT1). r/classicfallout - For the early Fallout games New Vegas Nexus - For all your New Vegas modding needsįallout 3 Nexus - For all your Fallout 3 modding needsįallout 4 Nexus - For all your Fallout 4 modding needs
